Card Spotlight – Exalted Commander

Oct 31, 2017

The spoiler season for Dead of Winter is underway, and today I have the privilege of sharing with you the card whose artwork has been crafted in my likeness. Let’s take a look at the Exalted Commander:

Exalted Commander

While the Commander does not draw cards, he still generates a ton of value. The floor on Exalted Commander is four attack worth of troops across two bodies—half of which is evasive. However, his true power comes from his global buff. The median stats for the Exalted Commander in an average game of HEX constructed is directly tied to your board.

Likely, Exalted Commander will slot into the top of the curve in Ardent based aggressive decks. This means we will be playing out troops on the first few turns of the game so, when the Commander comes into play, he has an immediate impact on the game. The +1/+1 boost the commander provides means your Crusaders are suddenly larger than your opponent’s, breaking a lot of parity that often exists in the current format.

The real question for how playable Ardent Commander ends up being in constructed will lie in the finer details of the format. If Harazza remains the premier aggressive deck, then Exalted Commander will likely be relegated to being a 1 of to enable Ardent Crusader. This is because the Harazza deck needs to max out on Moonrise Elder, and aggressive decks can only afford so many four drops.

There is also a possibly that the absence of Lazgar’s Vengeance in the format means that Exalted Commander could perhaps slot into a midrange shell featuring cards that go wide like Silver Talon Mandate.

At any rate, I am excited to see what else Dead of Winter brings with it as our new post rotation standard format begins to shape up!
